OBSERVATORY TECHNICIAN



The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Observatory Assistant. The successful candidate will work in support of research, instructional and service activities at the Department's observatories. The Dark Sky Observatory is equipped with four telescopes of 0.8, 0.5, and (two) 0.4-meter apertures. Instrumentation includes CCD cameras, photoelectric photometers, and Cassegrain spectrographs. All telescopes and domes, as well as instrumentation, are under PC control.

Responsibilities will include the development and day-to-day maintenance of the Observatory equipment and facilities. Applicants should have experience with the mechanical, optical, and electronic characteristics of modern computer-controlled telescopes, instrumentation, and domes. Candidates should be proficient with the PC operating environment including Windows and common programming languages. Instructional duties will include the teaching of an evening undergraduate astronomy lab section as well as the training and supervision of student laboratory assistants and the development of new lab exercises. Public service responsibilities will involve managing open house and public viewing sessions at the observatory. Telescope time will also be available for the Assistant's own research.

Minimum qualifications include a master's degree in physics or astronomy with demonstrated experience in telescope operations and laboratory instruction. An ability to interact well with students, faculty, staff, and the public is essential. The Assistant will work under the supervision of the Observatory Director.
